Learning in action for ABB

Design capability building in the company through a learning
by doing process

Introduction

How to exploit a new technology to offer a product that brings value to the market, the company and the end-user? Technology-driven companies excel at defining feasible and sustainable solutions, but very often struggle to offer products that are also desirable and meet the real needs of the market and the user. In these cases, the introduction of the design approach right from the research phase helps in considering the implications that the new technology may have on the market, understanding which product / service can be designed and in which characteristics to be easily used by the end user.

The guided method used during the project contributes to creating shared knowledge and unbiased outputs, fostering various knowledge and stimulating collaboration between departments that have never worked together on the whole research and development process.

Main activities

The main activities are conducted in a collaborative way, through online and in person sessions. The project was articulated through the following main activities:
  1. Contextual research (Segment analysis, qualitative benchmarking)
  2. Trend Research
  3. Stakeholder interviews
  4. Opportunities definition trough a co-design workshop
  5. Scenario building
