Applied research in the field of dry mortarless construction
to identify new scenarios for Scaffsystem

Introduction

The world of prefabricated construction has undergone great changes in recent years, many innovations have emerged and many more are being developed. This is why it is necessary for small and medium-sized companies to keep up with the times and be ready for the future. Scaffsystem therefore asked D+S to innovate its strategy and looking for new design directions for the prefabricated steel house and office sectors.

Main objective

The purpose of this applied research for Scaffsystem by D+S in collaboration with RE3_Lab of Polo di Lecco of Politecnico di Milano, was to explore and enhance steel construction methods. The main goal of the project is to identify new application and related guidelines and sustainable and performing design directions, useful to guide the company in positioning on the market of structural solutions for residential buildings and industrial solutions.

Main activities

After a first analysis phase that concerned the market, the company and consumers, 8 scenarios were defined. After an in-depth analysis of these, together with the company, 4 scenarios were identified on which to focus more, considered more similar to the company expectations and close to a possible realization given the production technology used. For the selected scenarios a strategy was developed to communicate with all stakeholders in the system and a communication strategy to launch and establish the new solutions. The result of this research is Casacadabra, a preview, a “light thought”, expressly conceived for the MDW19, born to describe the present and the future of steel dry construction systems derived from industrialization processes, exposing part of the theoretical research. A temporary structure designed to express both the values and the benefits of the steel construction system, mixing the emotional value of the new living system with the properties of innovative and high-performance materials and technologies.
