Main objective

The contemporary panorama is defined by hybrid spaces were economic and social interests converge. Coworking spaces, fab labs, maker spaces, incubators, collectives, associations, artisans create a complex local ecosystem. Are these actors connected? Do they share the same values? How “making” is connected with social innovation? How the Municipality sustain these formal and informal economies? What currently is the role of design in these initiatives? How can design improve and facilitate these dynamics?

Main activities

The main activities D+S research group has contributed as the Milanese ecosystem was concerned were:
  • Mapping and qualitative analysis of places and initiatives of (and for) (new) work, creativity and aggregation;
  • Semi-structured interviews with a small number of case studies (10), policy makers and crafts entrepreneurs;
  • Co-design workshop involving both the subjects previously interviewed, designers, and experts, focused on the creation of an Urban Living Lab in the Bovisa neighbourhood.
