The publication is a contribution to the reflection proposed by teachers and researchers from the Design area of the Iuav University of Venice on the evolution of the relationship between design and school, based on the interventions discussed during the study day "Design and School: Interactions between People, Spaces, Environments" (February 2, 2022).
Specifically, the contribution offers insights on the role of design in the planning of learning experiences, proposing a systemic approach that considers the different elements and factors that contribute to defining the boundaries of a project:
• the users and recipients,
• the context understood both as a physical space and the sociocultural conditions in which one operates,
• technological innovations.
A first analysis of this systemic vision is offered through the evolution of the relationship between the world of design and school from the early 20th century to today. There is also a subsequent focus on current challenges, where the goal of the learning experience becomes the empowerment of the personal abilities of the project's recipients.
In this perspective, service design acquires a primary role, which considers as design elements the interaction between the actors involved and the temporal dimension in which this interaction takes place.
