Explorative research to understand the impact of Ai in the manufacturing sector

Introduction

Cutting Edges is an Italian company that produces flat and rotary cutting dies and related accessories with a production process in which the worker's know-how, acquired through years of experience, plays a fundamental role. The advent of AI, however, is bringing radical changes in the way of working in this sector, as in others. In an environment that is becoming increasingly competitive, it is therefore becoming necessary for companies to understand the change taking place to implement strategies that allow them to keep up with the times.

Main objective

The aim of the project is to study and analyse the impact of AI on product development processes in the packaging sector and identify possible design directions that will help the company to respond to the ongoing change.
The development of artificial intelligence has been going on for a long time, but in recent months it has accelerated and is leading to rapid changes in work processes, raising the following questions:
  • what will be the impact of AI in the sector?
  • what are the new challenges?
  • what are the new market demands?
  • what are the new skills to be acquired?

Main activities

To reply to the previous questions, the project was articulated through the following main activities:
  • Audit workshop with the company, to define the boundaries and the main areas of interest of the research and a detailed and shared research brief.
  • Trend Research to search for emerging signals on the subject and observable best/practice even in different areas than the one in which the company operates.
  • Expert interviews with professional with different backgrounds but experience in specific areas relevant to the topic, to deepen the results of trend analysis and case study research.
  • Opportunities definition trough the identification of insights and HMW questions.
